Alpine, Arizona is the highest town in the state at 8,050 feet, tucked into the eastern end of the White Mountains and surrounded by the 2-million-acre Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. Its small-town character — local diners, a tackle shop, and a genuine off-the-grid feel — makes it a favorite day-trip destination from Greer. Just outside of town, the Escudilla National Recreation Trail climbs to the summit of Arizona’s third-highest peak at 10,877 feet, offering sweeping forest and meadow views. Luna Lake, three miles southeast of town, is an easy stop for trout fishing, birdwatching (bald and golden eagles frequent the wetlands), and lakeside picnicking. The Coronado Trail Scenic Byway — a dramatic 120-mile stretch of US Route 191 — begins here and winds south through some of the most remote mountain scenery in the Southwest.
